Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parish Family:

In just a few days, the month of August will be upon us.  The name traces back to the Latin word augustus, which was used to describe things that were sacred, venerable, or of high status.   Living up to that meaning, August is a month filled with some very special Saints’ days and feasts.  Here are just a few of those more well-known:

August 1: Saint Alphonsus Liguori, founder of the Redemptorists

August 4: Saint John Vianney, Patron Saint of Parish Priests

August 6: The Transfiguration of the Lord

August 8: Saint Dominic, founded the Order of Preachers: The Dominicans

August 9: Saint Theresa Benedicta of the Cross [Edith Stein], Jewish convert to Catholicism and Carmelite Nun, died at Auschwitz concentration camp

August 10: Saint Lawrence, a Deacon of the Early Church

August 11: Saint Clare, friend and co-worker of Saint Francis of Assisi

August 14: Saint Maximillian Kolbe, Franciscan Priest who died at Auschwitz concentration camp, taking the place of a husband and father sentenced to death

August 15: The Assumption of Our Lady, a Holy Day of Obligation

August 21: Saint Pius X, Pope from 1903-1914

August 22: The Queenship of Mary, Fifth Glorious Mystery of the Rosary

August 23: Saint Rose of Lima, beautiful and holy woman of Peru

August 24: Saint Bartholomew, one of the 12 apostles, also called Nathaniel

August 27: Saint Monica, prayed for the conversion of her son, Augustine

August 28: Saint Augustine, one of the greatest theologians of the Church

August 29: The Passion of Saint John the Baptist, celebrates his martyrdom

All you holy men and women, Saints of God, pray for us!

Love and prayers,
Father Neil Sullivan
