March 2, 2025

Dear Parish Family:

We had a wonderful Parish Pilgrimage to Rome last month.   All of our pilgrims were real troopers and true instruments of joy.  Each of them made the trip extra special by their goodness and excitement.   Friendships were made and grown.  Discipleship was enriched and strengthened.  The hospitalization of Pope Francis curtailed some of our activities but we quickly adapted and God surprised us with many extra special opportunities.  It was a great preparation for Lent!

Lent begins  on March 5.  We start our yearly pilgrimage to Easter with the cross traced on our foreheads with ashes.  We journey with Jesus to the Cross during Lent.  In this Jubilee Year 2025, we are reminded that we are Pilgrims of Hope.  We know that the Cross is a sign of hope.   It is the sign of Jesus’s love and our redemption.   This Lent, our pilgrimage follows the path of The Way of the Cross, The Way of Hope.

The three pillars of Lent guide this journey:

Prayer: Lent is a time to beef up our prayer life.  We might add more prayer time or experience a new way of praying (i.e., Rosary, Daily Mass, Eucharistic Adoration.)  Prayer is conversation with God. Not only do we talk to Him, but we listen to Him, too.

Fasting: Fasting makes room in our hearts for Jesus.  Those between the ages of 18 and 59 fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday with only one full meal, two smaller meals, and nothing in between. Those age 14 and up abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent. It doesn’t have to be just about food.  Consider cutting back on screen time, social media, or your favorite creature comfort.

Almsgiving: Almsgiving helps us focus on someone else’s needs instead of our own. It’s about sharing and sacrifice. It includes our time, talent, and treasure. Almsgiving gives thanks to God for all He has given us.

We have many special ways to pray, discover, gather, and share this Lent.  They were listed on the post card that was sent to all registered parishioner’s homes.  They are also in this week’s bulletin.  Be sure to check our website, Facebook Page, and Sunday bulletin for more resources.  Don’t forget our parish subscriptions to FORMED.ORG.  I look forward to making this Lenten pilgrimage with you as we follow The Way of the Cross, The Way of Hope.

Grace and peace!
