Dear Parish Family:
Habemus Papam! We have a Pope!
We heard these words from the balcony above Saint Peter’s Basilica 10 days ago. We received texts from family and friends … “there’s white smoke”. We gathered in front of screens to see the Pope make his appearance on the balcony. We watched the crowds jump and cheer. And then with all the world, we were introduced to Pope Leo XIV.
One reporter, commenting on the excitement of the crowd waiting for the announcement of the new Pope, said: “The crowd is elated not because they know him. But because they know who he is.” That statement struck me. As I was waiting to see who it would be, not knowing who it would be, no matter who it was going to be, I did know who he was. He was the Holy Father. The Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. The successor of Peter. The Vicar of Christ. It’s part of the mystery and history of the Church.
I love the interviews with John and Louis Prevost, the older brothers of Pope Leo. They talked about their normal life growing up in the Chicago suburbs. Nothing out of the ordinary. Typical baby boomer Americans. But it was clear to them that their baby brother, Rob, was hearing God’s call to the priesthood, how he began to know that, and how he followed.
A Pope from America is historic and, should I say, even shocking. What a tremendous gift to us here in the United States! There is an excitement, holy pride, and joy that we have. The Pope is the sign of unity and the leader of all Catholics throughout the world. But there is something extra special for us. An incredible opportunity. In addition to the communion with him as the Pope, there is a connection, a relatability, a shared experience with him. Just like we are proud of him, Pope Leo’s election is an opportunity to make sure he is proud of us. Living, loving, and sharing our faith. Being the best Catholics we can be: faithful, genuine, and holy.
The passing of Pope Francis and the election of Pope Leo XIV have captured the attention of the world. As the world looked to Rome and the Catholic Church these past three weeks, they will now look to us as the People of God, the living stones that build the Church. May the excitement of these days of grace and glory strengthen and renew us.
As we continue to learn and know more about Pope Leo, we already know who he his. God never leaves his flock untended. He has given us the 267th Pope to lead His Church at this moment of time in Salvation History. Thanks be to God.
Love and prayers,
Father Neil Sullivan
