The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mass

Each year on August 15, the Church celebrates one of the most beautiful feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary: the Assumption. We rejoice that, at the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed body and soul into the glory of heaven. In her, we see not only the fulfillment of God’s promise but also a glimpse of our own destiny. Where Mary has gone, we hope one day to follow.

This year, however, the feast falls on a Saturday. Because of the way the liturgical calendar works in the United States, the obligation to attend Mass has been lifted this year. While there is no obligation, the importance of the feast has not diminished. Mary is still the Mother of the Church, and the mystery we celebrate remains a profound source of hope and encouragement.

Masses for the Assumption here at Good Shepherd are on Friday (August 14) at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday (August 15) at 8:30 a.m.
